Verifying backlink indexation

Published · By IndexChex

Verifying backlink indexation means confirming that each page carrying a link appears in Google's index. Without Search Console access to the linking site, the practical method is to query live Google results for the URL using several forms (bare URL, quoted URL, site: and inurl:), then recheck a few days after submission.

Why verification is a separate step

Submitting a URL to an indexer and having that URL in Google's index are different events. Submission produces a crawl at best; Google then decides whether to keep the page, a distinction set out in crawling vs indexing. Verification is the step that measures the result instead of assuming it.

For the person who built or bought a link, the question is narrow: is the specific page carrying my link in Google's index? Whether the target page is indexed is a different, easier question because it is usually on a site they own.

Methods

URL Inspection (owners only)

If the linking page belongs to a property you have verified, Search Console's URL Inspection is the most detailed source. It reports whether the page is indexed, the Google-selected canonical and the last crawl date. Google notes that "URL is on Google" means eligible to appear, not guaranteed, and that searching for the URL is the definitive test. For third-party pages it is unavailable; see URL Inspection limits.

Manual search queries

Anyone can query Google directly. Each form catches a different subset of indexed pages:

Query formExampleStrengthWeakness
Bare URLexample.com/post/SimpleGoogle may treat it as a keyword search
Quoted URL"example.com/post/"Exact string matchMisses some URL variants
site:site:example.com/post/Restricts to the host and pathCan return nothing for indexed pages
inurl:inurl:example.com/post/Matches URL textBroad on short paths

A page that shows up for any of the four is very likely indexed. A page that shows up for none is probably not, though a single-run miss can be a false negative. The checker site covers how reliable the site: operator is in more detail.

Bulk index checkers

Manual queries do not scale beyond a few dozen URLs. Bulk index checkers automate the lookups against live Google results and return a status per URL, usually exportable to CSV. Accuracy differs by tool, mainly in how many query forms each one tries and how it handles redirects and canonicals.

IndexChex, the publisher of this wiki, runs all four query forms above for each URL and counts the URL as indexed if any form returns it. Checks cost 1 credit per URL with up to 10,000 URLs per job. Its weekly measurement on recurring URL sets put the checker at ~96% accuracy on average as of October 2026; the accuracy benchmark describes how that is measured.

When to check

Checking too early mostly reports pages still in Google's processing pipeline. A practical schedule:

  1. Before submitting. Check the batch first. Links already indexed do not need an indexer, which saves credits.
  2. One to five days after submission. By then most standard-mode results have settled; how long backlink indexing takes covers typical timelines.
  3. Periodically afterwards. Pages can drop out of the index later, and links can be removed. Ongoing link health is the subject of the monitor site's source page indexation entry.

IndexChex can schedule an automatic re-check 1 to 5 days after a submission, reserving the credits up front and refunding them if the check is cancelled.

Interpreting a "not indexed" result

A not-indexed status is a starting point for diagnosis rather than a verdict on the link. Common explanations, in rough order of how often they are fixable:

  • The page has not been crawled yet. Submit or resubmit it.
  • The page was crawled but Google declined to index it, often because it is thin or near-duplicate.
  • The page carries noindex, is blocked in robots.txt, or canonicalises to another URL.
  • The page or the link has been removed.

The first case is what a backlink indexer addresses, following the process in how backlink indexers work. The others need the page owner or a different link. The full list is in why backlinks don't get indexed.

Closing the loop

The efficient workflow is check, submit only the misses, wait, check again, and resubmit or abandon what remains. IndexChex supports this by letting not-indexed URLs from a check be sent to a new submission in one click. Whatever tool is used, keeping checks independent of the submission report is what makes the numbers trustworthy.

FAQ

Is a site: search enough to verify a backlink is indexed?

Not on its own. A site: query for a single URL can miss pages that are indexed, particularly with tracking parameters or alternate URL forms. Combining it with quoted-URL and inurl: queries reduces false negatives.

Should I trust the indexing tool's own report?

Treat it as a delivery receipt. A submission report shows what was sent and crawled; only a lookup in Google's results shows what was indexed.

How soon after submission should I check?

Checking within hours mostly finds pages still in processing. A first check one to five days after submission gives a fairer picture, with a second pass for anything still missing.

What does it mean if the linking page is indexed under a different URL?

Google may have chosen another URL as canonical. The link may still be discovered through the canonical version, but the submitted URL itself will appear not indexed in most checks.
